General description: ETH Zurich is one of the world leading universities, ranked as top university in continental Europe and as 7th best university worldwide in science, engineering, and technology. The supervisor’s laboratory is located in the Institute of Microbiology. Faculty at the institute consists of seven research groups that focus on the biological and chemical interactions between bacteria and other organisms in the context of symbiosis and pathogenicity. These PIs consistently publish in the very top journals.

Expertise: Jörn Piel provides expertise in the field of genetics of bioactive natural product biosynthesis in marine bacteria. He has ample experience in the isolation and characterization of biosynthetic pathways for production of bioactive marine substances, heterologous expression of biosynthetic genes from a variety of bacterial taxa, and the genetic engineering of polyketide pathways to generate novel substances. An important line of research is centred on the isolation and expression of biosynthetic gene clusters from metagenomes of symbiotic consortia and on the development of methods to access metabolic and biochemical novelty encoded in bacterial genomes.
