Dr. Marie-Lise Bourguet-Kondracki; Molécules de Communication et Adaptation des Microorganismes
– MCAM, UMR 7245 CNRS/ Muséum National d'Histoire Naturelle, Paris, France;

General description: Our research is focused on the complex ecosystem sponge-bacteria. The
major aims are (i) to identify the partners of the sponge/ bacteria association, (ii) to study the
chemical communication within the sponge-bacteria ecosystems (iii) to characterize the chemical
mediators involved in the association between bacteria and their host encompassing small
secondary metabolites and peptides. In this context, the investigations focus in the molecular
defence and communication of the complex sponge microbiota by identification of antimicrobial
(antibacterial and antifungal) and/or antioxidant compounds.

Expertise: M.-L. Bourguet-Kondracki has long-term experience in the isolation, structure
elucidation and structure-activity relationships of biologically active marine natural products from
sponges. More recently, she has been developing research studies on marine bacteria associated
to sponges combining microscopic, cultural, molecular biology and chemical approaches in order
to understand their role in the complex ecosystem bacteria-sponges.
