General description: As one of the ten national analysis centers belonging to the Ministry of Science
and Technology, P. R. China, NRCGA is the leading institute in China for geoanalysis science. The
research activities include the development of new analytical techniques and the preparation of
geological reference materials. In addition, they include ocean geochemistry and new material studies.

Expertise: X.H. Wang and her team are experts in the chemical and physicochemical
characterisation of geological and biological materials. They are experienced in: 1) Modern
techniques (SEM, AFM) to study the micro-structure and surface characteristics of spicules and of
other related materials, 2) in-situ micro-probe techniques (LA-ICP-MS, EPMA) to study the element
distributions across sections of biominerals and ferromanganese crusts, 3) NanoSIMS to study the
isotopic distributions (e.g. in sections of biominerals), 4) Methods to study the chemical
composition of ferromanganese crusts, sediments and seawater by bulk-analysis techniques (XRF
and ICP-MS).
