General description: The Center for Marine Research is part of the Ruđer Bošković Institute, which is the largest Croatian research centre in sciences and science applications. The mission of Ruđer Bošković Institute is to provide the science expertise indispensable for the development, prosperity and well being of Croatia. In the multi-disciplinary environment of the Institute more than 500 academic staff and graduate students work on problems in experimental and theoretical physics, chemistry and physics of materials, organic and physical chemistry, biochemistry, molecular biology and medicine, environmental and marine research and computer science and electronics.

Expertise: The Laboratory for Marine Molecular Toxicology (LMMT), leaded by R. Batel is specialized in cellular and molecular biology studies on marine organisms. One branch of the group focuses on water pollution, genotoxicity and marine molecular toxicology. Scientists included in this project have published more than 100 scientific papers related to cell processes, stress responses and pollution, ecology and ecophysiology of marine organisms, biomineralisation processes and fundamental biomaterials research and participated in several national and international projects. Recently he became – in addition to his appointment at the Ruđer Bošković Institute – also professor at the Juraj Dobrila University of Pula for Marine Biology/Biotechnology.
